Just after 1pm on Wednesday Feb 16th, Allegany ECC dispatched Company 5 (Corriganville) on a local alarm for an outside fire in the area of Portertown Rd & Mount Savage Rd. Co5 units arrived and found a fast moving, well advanced brush fire moving up the mountain and requested the brush task force.BRFD Brush 3 was dispatched on the brush task force and responded with 2 personnel, with 2 more personnel responding with the utility. Brush 3 arrived and took up position on an access road and deployed lines to form a line around the fire. Yesterdays weather conditions were just right, with low humidity, strong gusty winds and warm air temperature. The original fire moved up the mountain ahead of crews that positioned to cut it off on the first access road. Wind gusts started numerous other spot fires which quickly grew into larger brush fires before combining with the original fire. Brush 3 repositioned on top to the mountain and was tasked with protecting a cabin along with Tanker 630 (Wellersburg) & Brush 55 (New Baltimore). Crews worked re-deploying hand lines and cut a line using blowers and rakes and got containment on the fire as it approached the structure. BRFD crews operated for over 8 hours prior to being released. The size and terrain in addition to weather hampered efforts to gain control of the fire, which required units from 8 different counties in 3 states. BRFD also handled another outside fire while the crew operated on this incident and maintained a second crew in station for the duration of the incident.

Chief 5 (Kiser) held the Mount Savage Rd Command.

BRFD operated under the direction of Sector 2 officer, Chief 630 (Sloane)

Units: BR3 U3
